Sketching at FAI Marathon

img_1579I’m glad to write this post after a long silence because I just spent a wonderful Sunday volunteering at the FAI Marathon in Trieste.

But let’s start with few information. FAI is the acronym of Fondo Ambiente Italiano, an Italian Foundation that since 1975 is dedicated to save, restore and open to the public important venues of the artistic and naturalistic Italian heritage.

It is nowadays present all over Italy and it organizes every year several cultural event to disclose the beauty of our country thanks to the help of the volunteers that dedicate their time and passion to save Italian heritage through knowledge and valorization.

One of the two main events is organized in fall and it is called the FAI Marathon, managed by the FAI Giovani, the younger group of FAI Volunteers. On October 16th, 2016 3.500 volunteers opened and explained to the public over 600 venues in 150 city in Italy.

img_1578In Trieste this year marathon was dedicated to the roots of Trieste “Dalla Triade Capitolina al Colle di San Giusto“, from the roman period to the medioeval years and the cult of San Giusto.

The venues in Trieste were:

  • Orto Lapidario
  • Lapidario Tergestino
  • Battistero di San Michele
  • Campanile di San Giusto

In each venue the volunteers took the almost 1000 visitors on several  tours touching all the eras of Trieste development. It was a great experience to feel the vivid descriptions and narrations of the volunteers and to discover part of my city that I didn’t know about.

Also I was very glad to organize in collaboration with FAI Giovani Friuli Venezia-Giulia and Trieste Sketchers a sketchcrawl in the places of the marathon. A group of sketchers met in the morning and spent the day drawing those discoveries on their sketchbooks and the results were amazing. A mix of techniques, colors and textures that made the day so much more vivid. It is incredible how much passion and emotion can be transmitted through those sketches.

img_1615I am very glad to be part of those groups and I hope this collaboration can go forward and grow, maybe also outside the borders of Trieste. Definitely I’m already looking forward to the Giornate FAI di Primavera, which are held in spring, to discover some others amazing places of my city.

If you wish to see all the itineraries of the marathon of this year and the past years you can go to the FAImarathon website  , which in my opinion is also a great reference for your travels because it shows and explain many hidden places of our country.

VATROSLAV KULIS A TRIESTE

thumb_SAM_5080_1024Another great exhibition at Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste.  This time it was different, it is an expo dedicated to one contemporary artist, Vatroslav Kulis, a Croatian painter, and not to a collective exhibition connected to a period. The title “Centripetalne fuge”, a title that already express the dichotomy of his work.

KOLOVRAT – THE OPEN AIR MUSEUM OF WWI

Last Saturday it was the perfetct day to remember the tragic happenings of October 24th, 1917: the battle of Caporetto where Italy lost badly against the Austrian and German army.

During the whole year 2015, for the 100 years anniversary of beginning of WWI, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region organized many interesting visits on the trails that saw the battles and their cruelty.

Saturday it was sunny and the sky was blue and it was difficult to think what it must have been for the soldiers of both nationalities to live 100 meters apart, in the dirt and in the cold, shooting at each other and dying for some incomprehensible reason.

I’m not a scholar of any sort and I have a bad memory for historical facts, but I like to learn new things and I like to try to understad humans and their inhumanity. It is hard to visit this place and not to stop to reflect and to try to understand something that even 100 years later seems to make no reason.

Thousands of deaths for hundreds of meters, a war that at the end was based and won only by whom had more people to sacrifice.

I’m glad to have found those initiatives that will last until the end of November and maybe will be proposed again next year and I hope that I will be able to participate.

To visit those places with a guide that explains what happened and shows you the places and the details is a great opportunity to grow and to understand.

I look forward to the next one, and if you want to join you can find the list on www.itinerarigrandeguerra.it

PS I couldn’t stop during the day but during luch I couldn’t avoid doing a fast sketch of the Monte Piatto, where the last defence line of Italy was passing before the Caporetto battle.

PROSECCO BUBBLING STYLE – TRIESTE

12122718_1064954760206162_7217753638828781364_nMaybe too many bubbles were already in circle when I drew this but it is always so much fun to draw at events. To catch in few lines the atmosphere.

And at the Prosecco Show 2015 the atmosphere was great. Organized during the Barcolana Days it became a must go event, especially beacuse of the crazy Bora that was blowing outside.

I love the crazy Trieste weather, all the visitors experienced what winter is like in Trieste. I hope you enjoyed it!

MATITE IN VIAGGIO – 5th EDITION IN MESTRE

Poster-MIVAgain, for the fifth consecutive year, the exhibition of carnet de voyage organized in Mestre, at Centro Culturale Candiani, was pure emotions.

The organizing  association, Matite in Viaggio, proposed a three day event rich of opportunities to meet the artists, to discover their technics and to learn about their publications.

This is an example of event rich of culture and ideas that the public loved for its way of showing to the world a different way to live life and travels.

This events is an opportunity to learn about the phylosophy behind the Urban Sketching community, a group of people that show with passion what they see and what they live and that everybody could be part of.

Being an Urban Sketcher allows you to observe and fall in love with whatever surrounds you.

A way of travelling that helps you understand that impressions leave on you a mark that makes you what you are.

For me this event is also a way to stay with new and old friends with the same passion, to see what they are working at and to be inspired.

I also went to some of the conferences that were organized during the days and of course a short sketching visit in Venice was compulsory and here I discovered how much you can lose your hand in a couple of months of inactivity. Here my view on the San Marco bell tower.
